| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Population | Complete collection of all units or elements |
| Sample | Portion of the population selected to represent the whole population |
| Parameter | Numerical quantity, such as an average, that summarizes some characteristic of the population. Population parameters are symbolized by letters from the Greek alphabet |
| Statistic | Numerical quantity, such as an average, that summarizes some characteristic of the sample. Sample statistics are symbolized by letters from the Roman alphabet. |
| Sampling error | Discrepancy, or amount of error, that exists between a sample statistic and the corresponding population parameter |
| Descriptive statistics | Methods for describing or summarizing the characteristics of a set of numbers |
| Inferential statistics | Methods for making valid statements (inferences) about an entire population based on results obtained in a sample |
| Random sampling | Every person in the population has an equal chance of being selected into the sample |
| Representative sampling | Use a decision rule to get an unbiased sample |
| Cluster sampling | Randomly pick locations to study, and then sample intensively in that location |
| Stratified random sampling | Randomly selecting people within "strata" or groups |
| Convenience sampling | A readily available sample of people |
| Variable | Characteristic or condition that changes or has different values for different individuals |
| Constant | Characteristic or condition that does not vary but is the same for every individual |
| Random assignment | Each person in the study has an equal chance of being assigned to each group or condition of the study |
| What can impact external validity of a study? | Random sampling |
| What can impact internal validity of a study? | Random assignment |
| Nominal measurement | Observations are labeled and categorized, not numeric |
| Ordinal measurement | Consists of ranking observations in terms of size or magnitude |
| Interval measurement | Equal intervals between numbers reflect equal differences in magnitude, but there is no absolute zero point |
| Ratio measurement | Equal intervals plus an absolute zero point |
| Dichotomous variable | Variable described and assessed with respect to 2 categories |
| Categorical variables | Variable described and assessed with respect to 3-10 categories |
| Continuous variable | Variable described and assessed with respect to 10 or more categories |
