| Diseases | Any condition that interferes with the proper functioning of the body or mind. |
| Communicable Diseases | A disease that can be passed to a person from another person, animal, or object. |
| Pathogen | Disease-causing organisms that are so small they can only be seen through a microscope. |
| Infection | A condition that occurs when pathogens get inside the body, multiply, and damage body cells. |
| Viruses | The smallest pathogens. |
| Bacteria | Tiny one-celled organisms that live nearly everywhere. |
| Fungi | Organisms that are more complex than bacteria, but cannot make their own food. |
| Protozoa | Single-celled organisms that are more complex than bacteria. |
| Hygiene | Cleanliness |
| Immune System | A combination of body defenses made up of cells, tissues, and organs that fight off pathogens and disease. |
| Immunity | Your body's ability to resist the pathogens that cause a particular disease. |
| Inflammation | The body's response to injury or disease, resulting in a condition of swelling, pain, heat, and redness. |
| Lymphatic System | A secondary circulatory system that helps the body fight pathogens and maintain its fluid balance. |
| Lymphocytes | White blood cells in the lymphatic system. |
| Antigen | Substances released by invading pathogens. |
| Antibodies | Proteins that attach to antigens, keeping them from harming the body. |
| Vaccine | A preparation of dead or weakened GERS? that cause the immune system to produce antibodies. |
| Sexually Transmitted Diseases | Infections spread from person to person through sexual contact. |
| Contagious Period | The length of time that a disease can spread from person to person. |
| Opportunistic Infection | An infection that rarely occurs in a health person. |
| Carrier | A person who is infected with a virus and who can pass it on to others. |
