| drought | long-term lack of precipitation |
| eutrophication | when too many nutrients, like fertilizer, runoff into lakes or rivers causing an overgrowth of algae |
| overharvesting | taking too many fish from the water which makes the fish population low |
| estuary | an area where a river meets the ocean, and has lower salinity than the ocean, but higher salinity than the river |
| watershed | all of the land that drains precipitation and runoff into a river |
| nonpoint pollution | pollution that cannot be traced to a single source |
| surface water ace | any body of water on Earth’s surf |
| groundwater | water present in aquifers under Earth’s surface |
| salt | water naturally occurring water with salts, such as oceans |
| freshwater | naturally occurring water that is not salty and suitable for drinking |
| glacier | a large mound of ice and debris that moves due to gravity |
| pollution | putting any harmful substance into the environment |
