Genetics Terms Gr 7

TermDefinition
Genotype An organism's genetic makeup or allele combinations
Phenotype An organism's physical appearance or physical traits
Dominant A gene that covers up or dominates the recessive gene
Recessive A gene that is covered up or hidden by the dominant trait
Allele The different forms of a gene
Punnett Square The chart used to show all possible combinations of alleles that can result in a genetic cross
Hybrid An organism that has two different alleles or is heterozygous for a trait
Purebred The offspring of many generations that have the same traits
Homozygous Having two identical alleles for a trait: BB or bb
Heterozygous Having two different alleles for a trait: Aa
Probability The number that describes how many times something will occur
Genes Made up of DNA
Chromosomes A double rod of condensed chromatin
Selective Breeding Plants or animals are bred for particular genetic characteristics
Asexual Reproduction Organism divides or makes an exact copy of itself; mitosis
Sexual Reproduction The offspring of two different parents have different traits; meiosis
