UNIT 8 Vocabulary

Earth's Patterns of Change

QuestionAnswer
Cementation The process whereby dissolved minerals form crusts around sediments, binding them into rock. (tightly packed sediments)
Compaction The process by which pressure compresses sediment together. (closely packed sediments)
Decomposition The process in which dead organisms are broken down into simpler substances.
Fossil Fuel Coal, oil, and natural gas formed when the remains of living organisms are subjected to intense heat and underground over millions of years. ( coal, oil, & natural gas)
Natural Gas Colorless, odorless gas found deep underground; often found associated with oil deposits
Oil Naturally occurring, thick, dark, liquid fossil fuel found beneath Earth's surface; can be refined into many different products such as gasoline, diesel, and asphalt.
Sedimentary Rock Rocks that form from sediment that is deposited, compacted, and cemented together. ( sandstone, conglomerate, limestone, & shale)
Deposition The laying down of sediments in a new location. (loosely packed sediments)
Erosion The process of moving sediment from one location to another.
Landform Naturally occurring features on Earth's surface that result from weathering, erosion, and deposition.
Weathering The process of breaking down rock into smaller fragments without changing its composition - (two main types are: freeze-thaw & abrasion)
