The birth of a child with a disability can have a _____ profound effect on the family

Family systems theory individuales behavior in best understood in the context of the family and the family's behavior is best understood in the context of other social systems

Family interactions reverse to how cohesive and adaptable the family is
Cohesion refers to the degree to which an individual family member is free to act independantly of other family members
Adaptability refers to the degree to which families are able to change their codes of interaction when they encounter unusual or stressful situations
Family finctions the numerous routines in which families engage to meet their many and diverse needs
Family life cycle a component of the Turnbulls' family systems model; consists of birth and ealy childhood, adolescent, and adulthood
Guardianship legaal term that gives a person the authority to make decisions for another person; can be full, limites, or temporary; applies in cases of paretns who have chilren who have severe cognitive disabilites
Social support emotional, informational, or material aid provided to a person or family; this informal means or aid can very valuable in helping families or children with disabilities
Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) parent interventions that concentrate on training parents to use bahvioral principles to modify their child's difficult behavior
Family activity settings activites that families routinely engage in, such as mealtimes and seasonal celebrations; can be focal points for the implementation of PBSs
Relaxation response physiological recreation consisting of increasing metabolism, keeping breathing, reducing muscle tension, and constricting blood vessels, a center to stress often accompanying meditation
Mindfulness-Based Positive Behavior an intervention for parents and families of children with disabilities; a combination of mindfulness-based stress reduction and positive behavior support
Traveling Notebooks a system of communication in which parents and professionals write messages to each other by way of a notebook or log that accompanies the child to a from school
Due process hearing a non-court proceeding held before an impartial hearing officer
