Language Arts

TermDefinition
Informational essay A piece nonfiction writing designed to educate the reader on a specific topic, concept, or process
Hook A literary technique usually the opening sentence, paragraph, or scene designed to immediately grab the reader’s attention
Thesis statement A one or two sentence summary of a texts central argument, purpose, or main point typically located near the end of the introduction
Claim/topic sentence A debatable assertive statement that functions as the main argument of a of a paragraph
Lead- in To guide someone or something along the way
Evidence The pacific facts details quotations and information pull directly from a text that supports a readers analysis
Explanation A text type or statement that makes a concept process or events, clear and understandable
Citation A formal reference to a source of information such as a book, article, website, or used within a text to indicate that specific words, ideas, or data
In- text- citation A brief reference placed within the body of a text directly following a quote paragraph or summary that alerts the reader to an outside source
Transition word/phrase Used to link words, phrases, or sentences
Summary A brief statement or account of the main point of something to progress from one idea(expressed by the author)
Introduction The preliminary section of a book article or essay that acts as a “ gateway “ or “ roadmap” designed to prepare the reader for main content
Conclusion A judgment opinion, or decision reached after considering the details facts and evidence provided in a text
