1. What does exploration mean?
Traveling to unknown places to discover new lands, resources, or information.
2. What does colony mean?
A settlement ruled and controlled by a distant country.
3. What is mercantilism?
An economic system where countries gain wealth by controlling trade and colonies.
4. What does conquistador mean?
A Spanish conqueror who took over lands in the Americas.
5. What is a missionary?
A person who travels to spread their religion.
6. Why did Europeans want new trade routes to Asia?
To get spices and goods more cheaply and avoid middlemen.
7. What were the three main reasons for European exploration?
Gold, God, and Glory.
8. How did new technology help sailors travel farther?
Better ships, maps, and navigation tools made long trips safer and more accurate.
9. Name one navigation tool used during the Age of Exploration.
Compass or astrolabe.
10. Why was sailing around Africa important for trade?
It allowed Europeans to reach Asia by sea and trade directly.

Spain.

The Palace of Versailles.

31. How did absolute monarchs control the nobles?
They forced nobles to live at the palace or took away their political power.
32. How did absolute rulers use the army to keep power?
They built strong armies to enforce laws and stop rebellions.
33. How did absolutism affect the lives of peasants?
Peasants paid high taxes and had little freedom.
34. What role did religion play in absolutist governments?
Kings used religion to justify their rule and gain support.
35. Why did some people support absolute monarchs?
They believed strong rulers kept order and protected the country.
