| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| radiation | transfer of thermal energy by electromatic waves |
| latitude | the distance in degrees north or south of the equator |
| conduction | the transfer of thermal energy between materials by the collisions of particles |
| albedo | the measure of the reflectivity of a surface |
| wind | the movement of air from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure |
| convection | the transfer of thermal energy by the movement of particles within matter |
| polar easterlies | these are cold winds that blow from the east to west near the North Pole and the South Pole |
| Prevailing Westerlies | these are steady winds that flow west to east between latitudes 30 degrees north and 60 degrees north |
| trade winds | these are steady winds that flow from east to west between 30 degrees north latitude and 30 degrees south latitude |
| coriolis effect | Earth's rotation causes moving air and water to appear to curve to the right in the Norther hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere |
| Density current | the vertical movement of water caused by differences in density |
| upwelling | the vertical movement of water toward the oceans surface |
| surface current | a wind-driven current that carries ocen water horizontally across the ocean's surface |
| Gyres | couter clockwise in the southern hemisphere, big loops, surface currents, travel clockwise in the northern hemispher |
| Global Conveyor Belt | surface currents, upwelling, and density currents combine to form this |
