TermDefinition
Endocrine System The body’s message system that uses hormones to control things like growth, mood, and energy.
Gland An organ that makes and releases hormones.
Hormone A chemical messenger that travels in the blood to give instructions.
Receptor Cell A cell that receives a hormone message.
Target Cell The cell that a hormone is meant to affect.
Pineal Gland Controls sleep by releasing melatonin.
Hypothalamus The boss that links the nervous system and endocrine system.
Pituitary Gland The master gland that controls other glands.
Thyroid Gland Controls metabolism
Thymus Helps your immune system develop
Adrenal Gland Helps with stress and “fight or flight.”
Pancreas Controls blood sugar using insulin.
Ovary Makes eggs and female hormones.
Testis Makes sperm and male hormones.
Estrogen Female hormone that controls body changes.
Progesterone Helps prepare the body for pregnancy.
Testosterone Male hormone for muscle and body changes.
Insulin Lowers blood sugar.
Cortisol The stress hormone.
Adrenaline Gives quick energy for fight or flight.
Vasopressin Helps the body keep water.
Growth Hormone Helps you grow and build muscles.
Positive Feedback Loop The response increases the original action.
Negative Feedback Loop The response stops or reduces the action.
Type 1 Diabetes The body does not make insulin.
Type 2 Diabetes The body does not use insulin properly.
