Unit Three Vocab

QuestionAnswer
Democracy: A system of government determined by all the eligible voters, typically through elected representatives
Conservatism: A political and social philosophy that promotes free enterprise, private ownership, and socially traditional ideas.
Liberalism: A political and social philosophy that promotes free enterprise, civil rights, and social change
Capitalism: An economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit
Socialism: A political and economic system in which the means of production, distribution, and exchange are owned or regulated by the community as a whole
Communism: A system derived from the theories of Karl Marx, leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and all political, social, and economic decisions are made by the state
Fascism: A governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, and emphasizing aggressive nationalism and often racism.
Anarchy: The absence of a system of government
Sovereignty: The power to rule over a population
Autonomy: The right of people to rule themselves
Colonialism: The act of taking territory outside a country's borders
Infrastructure: The basic things: Roads, electricity, water supply, etc. that a society needs in order to function
Globalization: The process by which cultures become increasingly economically interdependent
United Nations: An international organization of 193 countries formed to promote international peace, security, and cooperation
GDP: Gross Domestic Product; the total value of goods and services produced in a country.
