TermDefinition
epithelial tissue many cells + little ECM
2 types of epithelial tissue membraneous and glandular
membraneous cover the outer and inner surfaces of body organs and cavities
glandular tissue made of epithelial cells that make and secrete a product
Glandular tissue 1 (Exocrine) continuous with membrane epithelia have ducts and secrete locally onto surfaces and cavities uni or multicellular Ex: goblet cell (uni), mammy glands & sweat glands (multi)
Glandular tissue 2 (Endocrine) lack ducts produce hormones that enter bloodstream target can be far away or nearby
Epithelia features intercellular junctions join cells avascular but innervated all attached to basement membrane apical surface must face lumen (cavity) or open environment
how to classify epithelia 1. number of cell layers 2. shape of cells
squamous flat, wider than it is tall, oval nuclei
cuboidal as wide as they are tall, circular nuclei
columnar taller than they are wide, oval nuclei
transitional epithelia can stretch and change shape umbrella cell found exclusively in urinary tract nucleus is round in top layer
goblet cell function goblet cells produce mucus that lubractes the apical surfaces
Cilia cilia move mucus across the apical surface
Simple Squamous Function Diffusion and Filtration
Stratified Squamous Function Protection
Simple Cuboidal & Columnar & Pseudostratified Function Absorption and Secretion
Connective Tissue Functions Surround and protect other structures, carry and store nutrients, support, immunity, insulate
Connective Tissue Fibers Collagen (I and II) and Reticular (III)
Ground Substance complex gel secreted by fibers that is made of hydrophilic molecules that help resist compression and increase flexibility
loose connective tissue proper loos areolar, adipsose, reticular cushioning support
dense connective tissue proper dense regular, dense irregular rigidity, motion and reisstance
Loose Areolar Connective Tissue surrounds muscle, nerves and blood vessels retains body fluid cells that could be present; fibroblasts, blood cells, adipocytes, collagen and elastic fibers
Reticular Connective Tissue forms a stroma that provides support for adipose, lymph nodes, bone marrow etc cells that could be present; fibroblasts, and reticular fibers
Adipose Connective Tissue Lobulated fat cells arranged in a cluster maintains shape, cushions and provide insulation cells that could be present; adipocytes, reticular
Dense Regular Fibers arranged in parallel Ligaments and Tendons
Dense Irreg Fibers arranged randomly dermis of the skin
Superficial Fascia is made of.... Loose Areolar and Adipose
Deep Fascia is made of.... Dense Reg and Dense irreg

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
