Acquired Immunity Immunity that develops after exposure to a specific antigen, which can be active or passive.
Adaptive Immunity A specific immune response that involves the creation of antibodies and specialized immune cells to target specific pathogens.
Adenoids Lymphatic tissues located in the upper part of the throat, behind the nose.
Agranulocyte A type of white blood cell that lacks granules in its cytoplasm, such as lymphocytes and monocytes.
All Lines of Defense The body's mechanisms against pathogens, typically categorized into three lines: physical barriers, innate immune responses, and adaptive immune responses.
Allele One of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
Antibodies Proteins produced by B cells that recognize and bind to specific antigens, helping to neutralize or destroy them.
Anticoagulation The process of preventing blood from clotting.
Antigen: A substance that prompts the immune system to produce antibodies against it.
Apheresis A medical procedure in which blood is taken from a donor or patient, a component is separated out, and the remainder is returned to the circulation.
Appendix: A small, finger-like tube attached to the large intestine, believed to have a role in the immune system.
B cell A type of white blood cell (lymphocyte) that functions in the humoral immunity component of the adaptive immune system by secreting antibodies.
Basophil: type of white blood cell that is involved in immune responses and releases histamine during allergic reactions.
Blood transfusions The process of transferring blood or blood-based products from one person's circulatory system to another's.
Bone Marrow: The soft, spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells, including immune cells, are produced.
adenoid/o: elating to the adenoids or glands.
coagul/o elating to clotting.
cyt/o relating to cells.
erythr/o relating to red, typically red blood cells.
hem/o: relating to blood.
is/o relating to equal or the same.
kary/o: elating to the nucleus of a cell.
lymphaden/o: relating to lymph nodes.
macr/o: elating to large.
