QuestionAnswer
Tissue Groups of cells that are similar in structure and function
Example of tissues Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous
Histology The microscope study of Tissues -Different types join to create organs
Epithelium Tissue - Found in the Bodies exterior -Lines internal body cavities, vessels and organs
Epithelium Characteristics - Always has one free side -Avascular (Little to no blood flow) -fits close together to form membrane -Supportive by connective tissue(underneath) -Highly mitotic->regenerates quickly
Epithelium Functions Protection, absorption, excretion, secretion, sensory receptor
Classification of epithelium is dependent on: 1.) number of cell layers 2.) Shape of superficial cell
Simple ET Single layer of cells
Stratified ET more than one layer
Pesudostratified Appears stratified but isn't
Squamous Cells are flat and scale like
Cubodial Cube shaped
Columnar Cells are taller than they are wide
Transitional Rounded and plump cells that can side over one another
Simple Squamous Location: Alveoli Function Rapid diffusion and filtration -Single layer of thin, flat cells, single nucleus of each cell buldges at center
Simple Cuboidal Location: Kidney Tubules Function: Absorption and Secretion -Single layer of cells about as tall as they are wide, spherical, centrally located nucleus
Non-Ciliated Simple Columnar Location: Inner lining of digestive tract Function: Absorption and secretion : Single layer of cells that are taller than they are wide, oval shaped nucleus, has goblet cells at the top
Ciliated Simple Columnar Location: Lining of inner Bronchioles Function:Secretion of Mucin Single layer of cells that are taller than they are wide, oval shaped nucleus, has fur, has goblet cells at the top
Ciliated Pseudostratified columnar ET "fake layers" Location: Nasal cavity Function secretion of Mucin : Single layer that appears ti be multiple, tall and skinny, varying heights, cells connected to basement membrane, fur
Non-Ciliated Pseudostratified columnar ET Location:rare-lining in male urethra Function: protection : Single layer that appears ti be multiple, tall and skinny, varying heights, cells connected to basement membrane
Keratinized Stratified squamous ET Location: Epidermis of the Skin Function: Protection of underlying tissue : multiple squished cells, dead and alive cells
NonKeratinized stratified squamous ET Location: Lining of oral cavity(mouth) Function: Protection of underlying tissue : multiple squished cells, only alive cells
Transitional ET Location: Lining of urinary bladder Function: accommodate urine bladder changes : Multiple cells looks, bump at the top
