Reconstruction The period of REBUILDING the former Confederate states and READMITTING Southern STATES into the Union.
Lincoln´s 10% Plan Plan for Reconstruction: once 10% OF VOTERS in the former CSA ( Confederate States of America ) TOOK AN OATH to United States, then they could form a State Government and be readmitted into the Union.
Andrew Johnson 17th PRESIDENT of the United States took over AFTER LINCOLN´S ASSASSINATION . He was sympathetic with the South.
Impeach To bring charges against a public official.
Civil Rights Legal protections ensuring equal treatment and opportunities for ALL citizens, GUARANTEEING fundamental rights like voting, and freedoms from discrimination because of race, religion and etc.
Amendment Official change, correction, or addition to the constitution.
Ratify Official approval
13th Amendment ( 1865 ) ABOLISHED SLAVERY in the United States and its territories.
14th Amendment ( 1868 ) Gave people ( men ) the RIGHT to CITIZENSHIP regardless of race.
15th Amendment ( 1870 ) Guaranteed that the state and federal government could NOT DENY the RIGHT to VOTE to ANY MALE CITIZEN because of ¨ race, color, etc. ¨
Freedmen´s Bureau ( Freed-Men ) An AGENCY created to provide food, clothing, and medical care to POOR Southerners, especially those FREED from SLAVERY.
Black Codes LAWS passed in the South during Reconstruction that greatly LIMITED the FREEDOMS and RIGHTS of AFRICAN AMERICANS .
Jim Crow Laws A LAW that ENFORCED SEGREGATION ( isolation of a race ) in the Southern states.
Sharecropping System of farming in which a FARMER WORKS land FOR an OWNER who provides equipment and seeds and RECEIVES a SHARE of the CROP.
Carpetbaggers NORTHERNERS who TRAVEL TO the SOUTH to help with Reconstruction. ACCUSED by Southerners AS EXPLOITING newly FREED MEN as means of OBTAINING office or PROFIT.
Scalawags NAME GIVEN by former Confederates TO SOUTHERN WHITES WHO SUPPORT Republican RECONSTRUCTION of the South.
Ku Klux Klan A SECRET SOCIETY created by white southerners in 1866 that USED TERROR and VIOLENCE to keep African Americans from obtaining their Civil Rights
Segregation The SEPARATION of a race, class or group.
LITERACY Test Limited African Americans from voting by REQUIRING potential VOTERS to READ and WRITE at a certain level.
Poll TAX A tax ( PAYMENT ) that had to be PAID before a person could VOTE. Put African Americans at a disadvantage.
Grandfather Clause A condition that allowed a person to VOTE IF their FATHERS and GRANDFATHERS had VOTED before Reconstruction began.
Lynching Putting to DEATH BY the ILLEGAL ACTION of a MOB.
Racism Discrimination against a person or people because of their racial or ethnic group
Discrimination Unfair treatment because of race, gender, disability and religion
Cash Crop A crop grown for profit instead of growing to feed ones self or family
Segregation Separating people because of race, gender, religion or other characteristics
