Factors affecting speed of an action potential
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| What are the 3 factors that affect the speed | Mylination and salatory conduction Axon diameter Tempreature |
| What does the Axon do | Is the conductive long fibre that carries the nerve impulses along the motor neurone |
| How does the action potential travel | This jumps from node to node which means the action potential travels along the axon faster as it doesnt have to generate an action potential along the entire length just at the nodes of Ranvier |
| How does the Axon diameter affect the rate at which it travels | A wider diameter means the speed of conductance increases A wider diameter means that there is less leakage of ions and therfore action potentials travel faster |
| How does tempreature affect the speed | A higher tempreature increases the speed of conductance for two reasons 1) The ions diffuse faster 2) The enzymes involved in respiration work faster. Therefore more ATP for active transport in the Na+/K+ pump |
