| Conflict | A problem, struggle, or incident |
| External conflict | A problem between 2 or more characters |
| Internal conflict | A problem or challenge within oneself |
| Abrupt ending | An unusually sudden ending that never makes it to a resolution |
| Plot | The overall sequence of events within a piece of writing |
| Antagonist | The enemy or rival of the main character |
| Exposition | Beginning, when the characters and setting are both introduced |
| Rising action | Reader introduced to conflict/conflicts |
| Climax | The point of highest intensity within a piece of writing |
| Falling action | We begin to move towards closure, loose ends get tied up |
| Resolution | The end of the piece of writing |
