| Irony | The opposite of what the reader expects to happen Ex. Johnny writes, tell Dally to watch the sunset.. the irony is Dally died at this point and can't watch a sunset |
| Rhyme | The corresponding of sounds between words or the end of words Ex. Nothing Gold Can Stay poem / Rhyme is Gold/hold day/Stay |
| Repetition | The repeating of something written/ word phrase, symbols Ex. Violence fighting, rumble, Sunsets-gold /gold, golden |
| Tone | The attitude of the writer toward his/her subject Ex. Johnny expresses to Ponyboy in his letter to "stay gold" encouraging, humble hopeful |
| Central Message | The big idea of literature. Lesson or what the reader takes away. Ex. Robert Frost wants people to enjoy the little things, he has the message nothing special or beautiful last forever |
| Theme | A unified or universal idea a piece of literature is about Ex. The Greasers vs Socs - The haves and have nots |
| Dynamic Characters | A character that changes or develops over the course of the story Ex. Johnny, he saved kids/ Randy was uncaring and ended up caring./ Pony grew as a person it was all about him, he sees more now./ Dally changed after Johnnys Death / Darry cold / warms up |
| Static Character | A character that does not develop over the course of the story Ex. Two Bit, Steve |
