Neptune Study Guide

Johann Galle The astronomer who first observed Neptune in 1846 using mathematical predictions.
Urbain Le Verrier The French mathematician who calculated Neptune's position based on perturbations in the orbit of Uranus.
John Couch Adams The British mathematician who independently predicted the location of Neptune at the same time as Le Verrier.
Triton The largest moon of Neptune, known for its retrograde orbit and "cantaloupe terrain."
Great Dark Spot A massive anticyclonic storm in Neptune's southern hemisphere first observed by Voyager 2.
Scooter A fast-moving, high-altitude white cloud formation on Neptune that orbits the planet faster than the Great Dark Spot.
Adams Ring The outermost ring of Neptune which contains five prominent arcs.
Liberty, Equality, Fraternity The names of three famous arcs within the Adams Ring, derived from the French national motto.
Retrograde Orbit The "backward" orbital direction of Triton, which suggests it was a captured Kuiper Belt Object.
Ice Giant The classification of Neptune and Uranus due to their high concentration of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium.
Fastest Winds Neptune holds the solar system record for these, with speeds reaching up to 2,100 kilometers per hour.
Twotinos Trans-Neptunian objects that exist in a 1:2 orbital resonance with Neptune.
Cubewanos Classical Kuiper Belt objects that do not have a specific orbital resonance with Neptune.
Voyager 2 The only spacecraft to have ever visited or conducted a flyby of Neptune.
Cantaloupe Terrain The unique, dimpled surface texture found on the moon Triton that resembles the skin of a melon.
