TermDefinition
Monophony Music that contains one melody standing alone
Homophony Music having main melody with other supporting musical material
Polyphony/Counterpoint Music that contains multiple melodies of equal importance
Heterphony A musical texture where multiple performers play the same basic melody simultaneously but each with sight individual variations
Pitch Sound that is musically useful
Timbre/Tone Color The unique quality that makes a sound distinct
Rhythm The progression of logical and ordered events through time
Beat The pulse of music with equal time in between
Meter A constant pattern of stress and unstressed beats with measure
Nonmetrical Lacking a regular arrhythmic pattern or constant beat
Meter in 2 A musical time signature with two beats per measure usually organized as a strong beat followed by a weak beat
Meter in 3 Musical meter characterized by three beats per measure often felt as a strong beat followed by two weak beats
Meter in 4 A musical meter with four beats per measure, first beat is the strongest followed by a weak second beat and a medium strength third beat
Melody Musical material of interest that is the most important and memorable, involving the succession of pitches that fall into units of completeness and can contain emotion or a meaning to the listener
Harmony More than one pitch sounding simultaneously
Tempo The speed of a beat
Dynamics The loudness or softness/ volume of a beat
Form A term describing the design or shape in music through logically related sections of melody and/or harmony centered in certain tonal areas
