| evict | to legally force someone out of their home. |
| exposure | the condition of being exposed without protection to the effects of harsh weather. |
| export | product or service that is sent out of a country to be sold or traded. |
| famine | a severe lack of food over a wide area leading to mass death. |
| genocide | the deliberate and systematic removal or mass murder of a racial, political, or cultural group. |
| ghastly | causing great fear or terror. |
| Great Hunger | 1845-1849 also known as the “Great Famine” or the “Irish Potato Famine”; a period of mass starvation, disease, and emigration in Ireland. |
| Laissez-Faire Capitalism | an economic philosophy that prioritizes minimal government regulation of markets, allowing competition between private individuals and groups in their pursuit of profit. |
| landlord | a person who owns land, usually referencing one who rents the land rather than uses it themselves. |
| loan | money temporarily given that needs to be paid back with additional costs over time. |
| malnutrition | inadequate or unbalanced food causing health issues. |
| Penal Laws | laws passed against Catholics in Britain and Ireland after the Reformation that penalized the practice of the Catholic religion and imposed civil disabilities on Catholics. |
| starve | to die or suffer from not eating. |
| tenant | a person who rents rather than owns the land/building they live/work on. |
| typhus | a serious infectious disease that is transmitted by fleas, mites, and lice and is marked by high fever, headache, delirium, and a red rash. |
| workhouses | a place where people are sent and forced to work for their housing and food, usually as a punishment for unpaid debts. |
