| Research | the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. |
| Observation | the action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information |
| Inference | a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. |
| Hypothesis | a tentative, testable, and falsifiable explanation for a specific phenomenon, observation, or scientific problem |
| Experiment | a scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or demonstrate a known fact |
| Independent Variable | a variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another. |
| Dependent Variable | A dependent variable is the specific outcome, response, or behavior measured in an experiment or study that changes based on manipulations to the independent variable |
| Controlled Variable | any factor in a scientific experiment that is kept constant, unchanging, or limited to ensure a fair test |
| Control | the power to influence or direct people's behavior or the course of events |
| Data | facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis. |
