Literary elements terms and definitions
| Term | Definition |

| Characterization | The process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character |
| Direct characterization | Tells the audience about the personality of a character |
| Indirect Characterization | Shows things that reveal the personality of a character |
| STEAL | The mnemonic device that helps us remember the 5 different methods of indirect characterization; Speech, Thoughts, Effect, Actions, and Looks |
| Characters | The people or animals in a story |
| Protagonist | Who the story is mostly about ( the main character) |
| Antagonist | The character who causes the problems |
| Dynamic Character | A character whose attitudes and/ or beliefs change in a story |
| Static Character | A character who's attitude and/or beliefs do NOT change in a story |
| Round Character | A character who is described in great detail |
| Flat Character | A character who readers do not know very well because there are very few details about them |
| Narrator | The "person" telling the story |
| Point of View | The perspective of which the story is told |
| 1st Person Point of View | The narrator is part of the story |
| 3rd Person limited Point of View | The narrator tells the story from ONE other characters point of view |
| 3rd Person Omniscient | The narrator tells about the past, present, and future through multiple characters point of view |
| Setting | Where the story takes place |
| Tone | The authors attitude toward the subject of the writing/text. The authors attitude can be positive, negative, or neutral |
| Foreshadowing | Hints that help the reader predict what may happen later |
| Suspense | The quality that keeps a reader interested |
| Symbol | Something that represents something else |
| Motif | an object or idea that repeats itself throughout a literary work, and contributes toward the development of a theme |
| Theme | The central idea or lesson the author wants you to learn |
| Plot | The events that make up a story, or the main part of a story . |
| Exposition | The introduction, includes major characters , names, setting, and mood |
| Conflict | The primary problem that drives the plot of the story, often a main goal for the protagonist to achieve or overcome |
