dynamic character a character whose attitudes and/or beliefs change in a story
static character a character whose attitudes and/or beliefs do not change in a story
round character a character who is described in great detail
flat character a character who readers do not know very well because there are very few details about them

mood the atmosphere or how the story makes the reader feel
what is the mood usually determined by? setting
tone authors attitude toward the subject of writing
literary elements components, or pieces, that make up a story or literary work
diction(word choice) the words the author has chosen to tell their story
diction can help readers determine the tone
foreshadowing hints that help the reader predict what will happen later in the story
suspense the quality that keeps a reader interested in the story
motif an object or idea that repeats itself throughout a literary work, and contributes toward the development of a theme
theme message of a story. The lessen the author wants you to learn
plot the events that make up a story or the main part
exposition (introduction) major characters names, setting, mood, and time
conflict the primary problem that drives the plot
internal conflcit person v self- a person must make a difficult decision
external conflict person v person-between two peeps person v society- person in conflict between a group with a believed idea person v nature- person in conflict with any force of nature person v fate(destiny)- person in conflict with or can't control their destiny
climax most exciting part of a story and a turning for the plot or goals of the main character
falling action (denouement) everything that happens as a result of the climax, including wrapping up plot points
resolution can leave reader with questions, answers, frustration, or satisfaction
