Characterization Process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character
Direct Characterization The Narrator tells the audience what the personality of the character is
Indirect Characterization Speech, Thoughts, Effects on others, Actions, and Looks reveal the personality of a character (STEAL)
Characters People/Animals in a story
Major Characters The main/most important characters
Minor Characters Supporting characters in a story
Protagonist Who the story is mostly about
Antagonist Character who causes problems for the Protagonist
Dynamic Character Character whose beliefs and/or attitude changes throughout the story
Static Character Character whose beliefs and/or attitude remain the same
Round Character Described in great detail
Flat Character Described in small detail, mostly unknown to the reader
Narrator The "person" telling the story
Point of View (POV) The perspective the story is being told through
First Person POV Narrator is part of the story
Third Person POV (Limited) Narrator tells the story through another's perspective
Third Person POV (Omniscient) Narrator knows everything about every character, story may be told through multiple perspectives
Setting Where the story takes place, including the time in history
Mood The atmosphere or how the story makes the reader feel, usually determined through setting
Tone The author's attitude toward a subject of writing/text
Diction Author's word choice
Imagery Author's use of vivid sensory words/language
Irony When what the reader thinks will happen is the opposite of what really happens
Foreshadowing Hints toward later plot
Suspense Quality helping the reader keep interest
Symbolism Something representing something else
Motif An object or idea that repeats itself throughout a literary work, contributes to the theme
Theme The central idea, message, or moral
Plot Referring to events that make up a story
Exposition The introduction to the story, including major character names, setting, and mood
Conflict The primary problem that drives the plot of the story, often a main goal for the Protagonist to achieve or overcome
