Scientific Investigation A scientific investigation is a systematic plan for asking questions and testing potential answers to advance knowledge about the natural world.
Research Research is a creative and systematic investigation undertaken to increase the stock of knowledge, involving the collection, organization, and analysis of information to uncover new facts or revise existing theories.
Observation In a scientific context, an observation is the act of using one or more of your senses—sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste—to gather information about the world.
Inference An inference is a logical conclusion or interpretation reached by combining direct observations with prior knowledge and reasoning.
Hypothesis A hypothesis is a tentative, testable explanation or prediction about a phenomenon in the natural world.
Experiment An experiment is a controlled procedure carried out to test a hypothesis, discover an unknown effect, or illustrate a known law.
Independent Variable An independent variable is the specific factor that a researcher intentionally changes or manipulates in an experiment to observe its effect
Dependent Variable A dependent variable is the specific factor or outcome that you measure in an experiment.
Controlled Variable A controlled variable (or constant) is any factor that a researcher intentionally keeps the same throughout an experiment.
Control In a scientific experiment, a control is the standard used for comparison to verify the results of a test
Data Data is the collection of facts, measurements, or observations gathered during a scientific investigation.
Conclusion A conclusion is the final section of a scientific investigation where you summarize your findings and state whether your results support or reject your original hypothesis.
Analyze To analyze is to break down your raw data into smaller parts to uncover patterns, relationships, or trends.
Scientific Bias Scientific bias is a systematic error in the design, conduct, or interpretation of a study that results in inaccurate conclusions.
Data trends In a scientific investigation, a data trend is the general direction or tendency of a variable to change over time or in response to another variable.
