Science

TermDefinition
Model a simplified representation of a complex real-world system, object, or process, designed to help scientists understand, explain, and predict phenomena
Scientific Investigation a systematic, evidence-based process for answering questions about the natural world, following the scientific method by making observations, asking questions, forming testable hypotheses, collecting data through experiments
Research the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.
Observation the action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information.
Inference a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
Hypothesis a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
Experiment a scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or demonstrate a known fact.
Independent Variable the specific factor, condition, or input that a researcher deliberately changes, manipulates, or selects in an experiment to test its effects on a dependent variable
Dependent Variable the specific factor being measured, observed, or tested in a scientific experiment.
Controlled Variable any factor in an experiment that is kept constant (unchanged) to ensure a fair test, isolating the effect of the independent variable (what's being tested) on the dependent variable (the outcome)
Control a component, group, or variable in an experiment that remains unchanged or untreated to serve as a standard for comparison
Data any collection of factual information—numbers, observations, measurements, or characteristics—gathered for analysis to understand phenomena, test hypotheses, and draw conclusions, forming the foundation for scientific reasoning.
Conclusion the final summary of an experiment or research study that interprets findings, states whether the data supports or refutes the original hypothesis, and explains the significance of the results
Analyze to systematically break down complex data, substances, or phenomena into smaller parts to understand their structure, function, and relationships
Scientific Bias a systematic, often unintentional, deviation from the truth in research—occurring during design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, or publication—that distorts results and leads to false conclusions
Data Trends the long-term, underlying directions or movements in data (upward, downward, or stable) observed over time or across conditions, distinct from short-term fluctuations or seasonality

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
