| Research | A systematic and careful investigation or study to discover new facts, revise existing theories, or create new knowledge. |
| Observation | The active, systematic process of noticing, monitoring, and recording phenomena or behaviors using the senses or scientific tools to gather data. |
| Inference | A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. |
| Hypothesis | An educated guess. |
| Experiment | A scientific procedure testing a hypothesis under controlled conditions to discover cause-and-effect, validate a theory, or determine the efficacy of something new, involving manipulation of variables and repeatable steps to draw logical conclusions. |
| Independent Variable | A variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another. |
| Dependent Variable | A variable (often denoted by y ) whose value depends on that of another. |
| Controlled Variable | A controlled variable (or constant variable) is any factor held constant in an experiment to ensure that only the independent variable influences the dependent variable. |
| Control | In scientific research, a control is a standard component of an experiment that remains untreated or unchanged to provide a baseline for comparing results and measuring the effect of independent variables. |
| Data | Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis. |
| Conclusion | A conclusion in science is the final step of an investigation, summarizing the results, evaluating the hypothesis (supported or refuted), and interpreting findings based on evidence. |
| Analyze | Examine methodically and in detail the constitution or structure of (something, especially information), typically for purposes of explanation and interpretation. |
| Scientific Bias | Scientific bias refers to systematic, often unintentional, errors in the design, data collection, analysis, or interpretation phases of research that lead to inaccurate, skewed, or non-objective results. |
| Data trends | The general, long-term direction or tendency of data to change (increase, decrease, or remain stable) over time or across experimental conditions. |
