Research research is the systematic, methodical process of gathering and analyzing data to discover new knowledge, answer specific questions, or solve problems
Observation Observation in the natural sciences refers to the active acquisition of information from a primary source.[
Inference Inferences are steps in logical reasoning, moving from premises to logical consequences; etymologically, the word infer means to "carry forward
Hypothesis A hypothesis (pl.: hypotheses) is a proposed explanation for a phenomenon
Experiment Experiments provide insight into cause-and-effect by demonstrating what outcome occurs when a particular factor is manipulated.
Independent Variable Statistics. (in an experiment) a variable that is intentionally changed to observe its effect on the dependent variable.
Dependent Variable A variable is considered dependent if it depends on (or is hypothesized to depend on) an independent variable.
Controlled Variable A control variable (or scientific constant) in scientific experimentation is an experimental element which is constant (controlled) and unchanged throughout the course of the investigation
Control control is a standard, unchanging component of an experiment used as a benchmark to measure the effects of an independent variable
Data Data science is an interdisciplinary academic field[1] that uses statistics, scientific computing, scientific methods, processing, scientific visualization, algorithms
Conclusion A conclusion in science is the final step of an experiment or research study that interprets data to determine if a hypothesis is supported or refuted
Analyze to analyze means to systematically break down data, specimens, or complex phenomena into smaller components to examine their structure, function, and interrelationships
Scientific Bias is any systematic, often unintentional, error or trend in the collection, analysis, interpretation, or publication of data that causes results to deviate from the truth
Data trends refer to the long-term, general direction of change in experimental or observational data over time

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
