Westward Expansion

| Manifest Destiny | Idea that the United States should expand to include the territory from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean |
| Pioneers | Someone is first to settle a region or enter into a project |
| Frontier | A region with with very few people living init or new field of study or exploration |
| Industry | Economic activity involving transforming raw materials into finished goods in factories |
| Region | A cohesive area of the Earth's surface defined by shared physical, human, or functional characteristics, such as climate, language, government, or economic activity |
| Migration | A movement of people to a new area or country in order to find work or better living conditions |
| Settlers | A person who moves with a group of others to live in a new country or area especially one inhabited by people of a different ethnic or religious group, or one sparsely populated |
| Forty-niners | Roughly 40,000 to 100,000 gold prospectors who mirgrated to California in 1849 following the 1848 discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill. ( seeking rapid wealth) |
| Communication | the evolving methods of exchanging information. This included telegraphy, postal system, telephone, radio, television and internet. This bridged geographic distances. |
| Urbanization | the rapid, large scale movement of people from rural, agricultural areas to cities, driven by industrialization and immigration, particularly between 1876-1920 |
| Trail of Tears | This was forced migration of Native American nations (designated Indian territory) under the Indian Removal Act of 1830 |
| Oregon Trail | 2000 mile, heavily used overland wagon route connecting the Missouri River to Oregon. From 1840-1880 |

| Eli Whitney | He invented the cotton gin which helped plantation owners farm their land |
| Sacagawea | A Native American woman who played a vital role as a guide and interpreter and diplomat for the Lewis and Clark Expedition |
