| Antigen | A toxin or foreign substance that induces an immune response |
| Venipuncture | The puncture of a vein to withdraw blood |
| Hemolysis | The rupture or destruction of red blood cells turns the plasma pink |
| Gel Separator | Gel substance in SST tubes, which separates whole blood cells from serum |
| Capillary Puncture | Finger, heel, or ear lobe stick with a lancet to collect capillary blood |
| Buffy Coat | Small Layer of separated blood containing WBCs / Platelets = 1% whole blood |
| Plasma | The light yellow liquid portion of blood= 55% of whole blood |
| Serum | The liquid portion of blood after it has clotted |
| Anticoagulant | An additive to prevent blood from clotting |
| Centrifuge | A machine that uses centrifugal force to separate fluids and solids |
| Clot Activator | An additive used to speed up clotting time for blood samples |
| Albumin | Smallest plasma proteins that help maintain blood pressure-high levels can indicate liver or kidney issues |
| Globulin | Transports lipids and vitamins in the plasma |
| Fibrinogen | An important protein in the blood clotting process |
