QuestionAnswer
water A compound (H₂O) essential for life that can exist as a solid, liquid, or gas
polarity An uneven distribution of electrical charge in a molecule; water is polar
surface tension The cohesive force at the surface of water that makes it act like a stretched skin
capillary action The movement of water through small spaces due to cohesion and adhesion
cohesion Attraction between molecules of the same substance
adhesion Attraction between molecules of different substances
capacity The ability of a substance to hold or store something, such as heat
temperature A measure of how hot or cold something is, based on particle motion
agent Something that causes change or produces an effect
climate The long-term average weather patterns of a region
heat Thermal energy that flows from warmer objects to cooler ones
convection Heat transfer through the movement of liquids or gases
energy transfer The movement of energy from one place or object to another
store To hold energy for later use
absorb To take in energy, such as heat
transmit To pass energy from one place to another
energy The ability to do work or cause change
deep ocean Cold, dense water found far below the ocean surface
surface water The upper layer of ocean water warmed by the Sun
Coriolis effect The apparent bending of moving air or water due to Earth’s rotation
specific heat The amount of heat needed to change the temperature of a substance
density The amount of mass in a given volume
salinity The amount of dissolved salt in water
current A continuous flow of water in the ocean
thermohaline circulation Global ocean movement driven by differences in temperature and salinity
ocean current Large-scale movement of ocean water that transfers heat around Earth
wind patterns The general movement of air across Earth’s surface
specific heat capacity The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of a substance by one degree.
latent heat Energy absorbed or released during a phase change without changing temperature
evaporation The process where liquid water changes into water vapor
condensation The process where water vapor changes into liquid water
surface tension The force created by cohesion at the surface of water
energy circulations The continuous movement of energy through Earth systems
thermocline A layer in the ocean where temperature changes rapidly with depth
halocline A layer in the ocean where salinity changes rapidly with depth
melting The change of a solid into a liquid
freezing The change of a liquid into a solid
wave formation The creation of waves caused mainly by wind transferring energy to water
heat transfer The movement of thermal energy from warmer areas to cooler areas

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
