Greenhouse gases Gases in the atmosphere that trap heat and warm the Earth.
Greenhouse effect The process where greenhouse gases hold in heat, keeping Earth warm.
Climate The average weather of a place over a long time.
Human A person; relating to people and their activities.
Absorption of heat When something takes in heat instead of reflecting it.
Atmospheric heating The warming of Earth’s atmosphere.
Water vapor (H₂O) Water in gas form in the air; a greenhouse gas.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) A greenhouse gas released by breathing, burning fuels, and cutting trees.
Methane (CH₄) A strong greenhouse gas from animals, landfills, and farming.
Nitrous oxide (N₂O) A greenhouse gas from fertilizers and farming activities.
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) Man-made gases used in cooling that harm the atmosphere.
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) Man-made gases used in refrigerants that trap a lot of heat.
Ozone (O₃) A gas that protects Earth from the sun high in the atmosphere but can be harmful near the ground.
Burning fossil fuels Using coal, oil, or gas for energy, which releases greenhouse gases.
Refrigerant A substance used in refrigerators and air conditioners to keep things cool.
Respiration The process of breathing in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide.
Natural forest fires Fires started by nature, such as lightning.
Emissions Gases or substances released into the air.
Temperature How hot or cold something is.
Precipitation Rain, snow, sleet, or hail falling from the sky.
Agriculture practices Ways people grow crops and raise animals.
Volcanic eruptions When a volcano releases lava, ash, and gases.
