TermDefinition
Greenhouse gases Gases in the air that trap heat and warm the Earth.
Greenhouse effect The process where greenhouse gases trap heat from the sun, keeping Earth warm.
Climate The average weather of a place over a long time.
Human climate impact Changes to climate caused by human activities.
Absorption of heat When something takes in heat energy instead of reflecting it.
Atmospheric heating Warming of the air around the Earth.
Water vapor (H₂O) Water in gas form; the most common greenhouse gas.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) A greenhouse gas released by burning fuels and breathing.
Methane (CH₄) A strong greenhouse gas released by animals, waste, and natural sources.
Nitrous oxide (N₂O) A greenhouse gas released from fertilizers and soil.
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) Man-made gases used in cooling that warm the climate.
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) Man-made gases used in cooling systems that trap heat in the atmosphere.
Ozone (O₃) A gas that protects Earth from harmful UV rays when in the upper atmosphere.
Burning fossil fuels Using coal, oil, or gas for energy, which releases gases into the air.
Refrigerant A substance used in air conditioners and refrigerators to keep things cool.
Respiration The process by which living things breathe and release carbon dioxide.
Natural forest fires Fires started by natural causes like lightning that release smoke and gases.
Emissions Gases or particles released into the air.
Temperature A measure of how hot or cold something is.
Precipitation Water that falls from the sky as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
Agriculture practices Ways humans grow crops and raise animals.
Volcanic eruptions Explosions of lava, ash, and gases from a volcano.
