TermDefinition
greenhouse gases Greenhouse gases are gases that trap heat in Earth’s atmosphere.
greenhouse effect The greenhouse effect is the process where greenhouse gases keep Earth warm by trapping heat.
climate Climate is the long-term pattern of weather in a region.
human Humans affect climate through activities like burning fuels and changing land use.
climate Climate refers to average temperature, precipitation, and weather patterns over many years.
absorption of heat Absorption of heat is when matter takes in thermal energy.
atmosphering heating Atmospheric heating happens when gases in the air absorb and retain heat energy.
water vapor (H₂O) Water vapor is the most abundant greenhouse gas and strongly affects temperature.
carbon dioxide (CO₂) Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas released by burning fossil fuels and respiration.
methane (CH₄) Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas released from agriculture, landfills, and natural sources.
nitrous oxide (N₂O) Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas mainly released from fertilizers and soil processes.
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) HCFCs are human-made gases used in cooling that contribute to warming and ozone damage.
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) HFCs are synthetic greenhouse gases used as refrigerants with strong heat-trapping ability.
ozone (O₃) Ozone traps heat in the atmosphere but also protects Earth from harmful UV radiation.
burning fossil fuels Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
refrigerant A refrigerant is a chemical used in cooling systems that can act as a greenhouse gas.
respiration Respiration releases carbon dioxide as organisms break down food for energy.
natural forest fires Natural forest fires release carbon dioxide and particles into the atmosphere.
emissions Emissions are gases or particles released into the air.
temperature Temperature measures how hot or cold the atmosphere or Earth’s surface is.
precipitation Precipitation is water that falls from the atmosphere, such as rain or snow.
agriculture practices Some agriculture practices release methane and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere.
volcanic eruptions Volcanic eruptions release gases and ash that can temporarily affect climate.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
