otoscope Instrument used to look inside the ear canal and view the eardrum.
ear canal Tube that carries sound to the eardrum.
tympanic membrane Eardrum; vibrates when sound hits it.
ossicles Three tiny bones (malleus, incus, stapes) that transmit sound vibrations
eustachian tube Equalizes pressure between middle ear and throat.
cochlea Spiral structure that converts sound vibrations into nerve signals.
semicircular canals Help control balance.
Acute Otitis Media Sudden middle ear infection.
Ophthalmoscope Instrument used to examine the inside of the eye.
Visual Acuity Sharpness or clarity of vision.
Conjunctivitis Inflammation of the conjunctiva (“pink eye”).

Tonsils Lymph tissue that helps fight infection.

Intercostal Space Space between the ribs.
Lub-Dub Normal heart sound.
S1 (Lub) Closure of mitral and tricuspid valves.
S2 (Dub) Closure of aortic and pulmonic valves.
Murmur Abnormal heart sound from turbulent blood flow.
Premature Ventricular Contraction (PVC) Early extra heartbeat from ventricles.
Aortic Valve Between left ventricle and aorta.
Pulmonic Valve Between right ventricle and pulmonary artery.
Tricuspid Valve Between right atrium and right ventricle.
Mitral Valve Between left atrium and left ventricle.
Aorta Largest artery; carries oxygenated blood to body.
Atria Upper chambers of heart
Ventricles Lower chambers of heart.
Wheezing High-pitched sound from narrowed airways.
Crackles (Rales) Popping sounds from fluid in lungs.
Rhonchi Low, snoring sound from mucus in airways.
Stridor Harsh sound from airway obstruction.
Trachea Windpipe.
