neuron A highly specialized cell found in nervous systems of animals that communicates with other cells by electrical or chemical signals.
brain Organ of the central nervous system of animals that functions to process and integrate information and to control the body's sensory and motor functions.
nerve A structure found in the peripheral nervous system that is composed of multiple myelinated axons bound by connective tissue; carries information to or from the central nervous system.
central nervous system (CNS) In vertebrates, the brain and spinal cord.
peripheral nervous system (PNS) In vertebrates, all nerves and ganglia outside the brain and spinal cord.
