Answer
Water A clear liquid (H₂O) that covers most of Earth and is necessary for life.
Polarity When a molecule has a positive end and a negative end, like water does.
Surface tension A force on the surface of water that makes it act like a thin “skin.”
Capillary action When water moves up small spaces (like in plant stems) because of cohesion and adhesion.
Cohesion When water molecules stick to each other.
Adhesion When water molecules stick to other substances.
Capacity The amount something can hold.
Temperature A measure of how hot or cold something is.
Agent Something that causes change.
Climate The average weather in a place over a long time.
Heat Energy that moves from something warmer to something cooler.
Convection Heat transfer by movement of liquids or gases.
Energy transfer The movement of energy from one place or object to another.
Store To hold or keep something for later use.
Absorb To take in energy or a substance.
Transmit To send or pass something along.
Energy The ability to do work or cause change.
Deep ocean The cold, lower part of the ocean far below the surface.
Surface water The top layer of ocean water that is warmed by the sun.
Coriolis effect The way Earth’s rotation causes winds and ocean currents to curve.
Specific heat The amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a substance.
Density How much mass is in a certain amount of space.
Salinity The amount of salt in water.
Current A steady flow of water or air in one direction.
Thermohaline circulation The movement of ocean water caused by differences in temperature (thermo) and salinity (haline).
Ocean current A large stream of moving water in the ocean.
Wind patterns The usual directions and movements of winds in an area.
Specific heat capacity The amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a substance by 1 degree.
Latent heat Heat absorbed or released when a substance changes state (like melting or evaporating).
Evaporation When liquid water turns into water vapor (gas).
Condensation When water vapor cools and turns back into liquid.
Surface tension The tight “skin-like” surface of water caused by cohesion.
Energy circulations The movement of energy around Earth through air, water, and heat.
Thermocline A layer in the ocean where temperature changes quickly with depth.
Halocline A layer in the ocean where salinity changes quickly with depth.
Melting When a solid turns into a liquid.
Freezing When a liquid turns into a solid.
Wave formation How waves are created, usually by wind blowing across water.
Heat transfer The movement of heat from warmer areas to cooler areas.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
