TermDefinition
water A liquid essential for life that can store and transfer heat.
polarity A property of water where it has slightly positive and negative ends.
surface tension The ability of water’s surface to resist breaking due to attraction between molecules.
capillary action Water moving upward through small spaces against gravity.
cohesion Attraction between water molecules.
adhesion Attraction between water and other substances.
capacity The ability of a substance to hold or store something, such as heat.
temperature A measure of how hot or cold something is.
agent Something that causes change or produces an effect.
climate The long-term average weather of a region.
heat Energy that moves from warmer objects to cooler ones.
convection Heat transfer by the movement of fluids (liquids or gases).
energy transfer The movement of energy from one place or form to another.
store To hold energy for later use.
absorb To take in energy, heat, or matter.
transmit To pass energy or heat from one place to another.
energy The ability to do work or cause change.
deep ocean Cold, dense water far below the ocean surface.
surface water The upper layer of ocean water that is warmer and lighter.
coriolis effect The bending of moving air or water due to Earth’s rotation.
specific heat The amount of energy needed to raise a substance’s temperature.
density How much mass is packed into a given volume
salinity The amount of salt dissolved in water.
current A steady movement of water in the ocean.
thermohaline circulation Global ocean movement driven by temperature and salinity differences.
ocean current Large-scale movement of seawater through the oceans.
wind patterns Common directions that winds follow over time.
specific heat capacity How well a substance resists temperature change when heated or cooled.
latent heat Energy absorbed or released during a change of state (not temperature).
evaporation Liquid water changing into water vapor.
condensation Water vapor changing into liquid water.
energy circulations Continuous movement of energy through Earth systems.
thermocline A layer where ocean temperature changes rapidly with depth.
halocline A layer where ocean salinity changes rapidly with depth.
melting A solid changing into a liquid.
freezing A liquid changing into a solid.
wave formation The creation of waves, usually by wind transferring energy to water.
heat transfer The movement of heat by conduction, convection, or radiation.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
