TermDefinition
water A liquid made of hydrogen and oxygen that is essential for life.
polarity An uneven distribution of electric charge in a molecule.
surface tension The attraction between water molecules at the surface that makes it act like a skin.
capillary action The movement of water through narrow spaces without gravity.
cohesion Attraction between molecules of the same substance.
adhesion Attraction between molecules of different substances.
capacity How much something can store
temperature `A measure of how hot or cold something is.
agent Something that causes change or has an effect.
climate The long-term pattern of weather in an area.
heat Thermal energy that moves from warmer to cooler objects.
convection Heat transfer by the movement of fluids (liquids or gases).
energy transfer The movement of energy from one place or form to another.
store To keep energy or materials for later use.
absorb To take in energy or matter.
transmit To pass energy or something else from one place to another.
energy The ability to do work or cause change.
deep ocean Cold, dense water found far below the ocean surface.
surface water The upper layer of the ocean that interacts with air and sunlight.
Coriolis affect The bending of moving objects due to Earth’s rotation.
specific heat The amount of heat needed to raise a substance’s temperature.
density How much mass is packed into a given volume.
salinity The amount of salt dissolved in water.
current A steady flow of water in the ocean.
thermohaline circulation Global ocean movement driven by temperature and salinity differences.
ocean currents Large-scale movement of ocean water in a specific direction.
wind patterns Common directions and behaviors of winds over Earth.
specific heat capacity The amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a substance by 1°C.
latent heat Energy absorbed or released during a phase change.
evaporation Liquid water changing into water vapor.
condensation Water vapor changing into liquid water.
surface tension The force that holds water molecules together at the surface.
energy circulation The movement of energy through Earth’s systems.
thermocline A layer in the ocean where temperature changes rapidly with depth.
halocline A layer in the ocean where salinity changes rapidly with depth.
melting A solid changing into a liquid.
freezing A liquid changing into a solid.
wave formation The creation of waves, mainly caused by wind moving over water.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
