| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Water | A polar molecule (H₂O) essential for life. |
| Capillary action | Movement of water through narrow spaces against gravity due to cohesion and adhesion. |
| Cohesion | Attraction between molecules of the same substance (water sticks to water). |
| Adhesion | Attraction between molecules of different substances (water sticks to other surfaces). |
| Property | A characteristic that describes how matter behaves or appears. |
| Polarity | Uneven distribution of electrical charge in a molecule. |
| Transfer | Movement of energy or matter from one place to another. |
| Energy | The ability to do work or cause change. |
| Atmosphere | The layer of gases surrounding Earth. |
| Hydrosphere | All the water on Earth (oceans, lakes, rivers, ice, vapor). |
| Climate | Long-term pattern of weather in a region. |
| Convection | Transfer of heat by movement of fluids (liquids or gases). |
| Freeze | Change of state from liquid to solid. |
| Dissolve | To mix evenly into a solution. |
| Specific heat capacity | Amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of a substance. |
| Solid | State of matter with a fixed shape and volume. |
| Liquid | State of matter with fixed volume but no fixed shape. |
| Gas | State of matter with no fixed shape or volume. |
| Solute | Substance that is dissolved. |
| Solvent | Substance that does the dissolving. |
| Solution | A mixture where a solute is evenly dissolved in a solvent. |
| A mixture where a solute is evenly dissolved in a solvent. | Cohesive force at the surface of a liquid. |
| Water cycle | Continuous movement of water through Earth’s systems. |
| Kelvin scale | Kelvin scale |
| Absolute scale | A temperature scale starting at absolute zero (Kelvin). |
| Universal solvent | Substance that dissolves many materials (water). |
| Homogeneous solution | Mixture with uniform composition. |
| Heterogeneous solution | Mixture with uneven composition. |
| Examples of heterogeneous solutions | Sand in water |
| Examples of homogeneous solutions | Salt water |
| Example of cohesion | Water droplets forming beads on a leaf |
