Colour Idioms

Once in a blue moon Meaning: Very rarely. Example:** "My sister lives Example: "My sister lives in Australia, so I only see her **once in a Spanish:** *Muy de vez en cuando / Una vez a las mil.*
Out of the blue Meaning:** Unexpectedly; without warning. Example:** "She called me **out of the blue after three years of silence." Spanish:** *De la nada / Por sorpresa / Inesperadamente.*
To catch someone red-handed Meaning:** To catch someone in the act of doing something wrong. Example: "The police caught the thief **red-handed** while he was breaking into the safe." Spanish:** *Coger a alguien con las manos en la masa.*
A white lie Meaning:** A small, harmless lie told to avoid hurting someone's feelings. Example:** "I told a **white lie** about her cooking so she wouldn't feel bad." Spanish:** *Una mentira piadosa.*
To be green with envy Meaning:** To be very jealous. *Example:** "He was **green with envy** when he saw my new laptop." Spanish:** *Estar muerto de envidia.*
The black sheep Meaning:** A member of a family or group who is regarded as a disgrace or different from the others. Example:** "He became an artist in a family of doctors, so he is the **black sheep**." Spanish:** *La oveja negra.*
With flying colours Meaning:** To succeed easily and with a high score. Example:** "Don't worry about the driving test; you will pass **with flying colours**. Spanish:** *Con éxito rotundo / Con nota / Sobresaliente.*
Golden opportunity Meaning:** An excellent chance to do something. Example:** "Studying abroad is a **golden opportunity** to learn a new language." *Spanish:** *Una oportunidad de oro.*
To see red Meaning:** To become suddenly very angry. Example:** "When he lied to my face, I just **saw red**." Spanish:** *Ponerse furioso / Perder los estribos.*
A grey area Meaning:** A situation that is not clear or where the rules are not defined. Example:** "Downloading music for free is often considered a legal **grey area**." Spanish:** *Un vacío legal / Una zona gris / Algo ambiguo.*
To feel blue Meaning: To feel sad or depressed. Example: "I always feel blue on rainy Sundays when I have nothing to do." Spanish: Estar triste / Estar de bajón / Sentirse melancólico.
Think green Meaning: To consider the environment when making decisions; to be environmentally friendly and sustainable. Example: "Our school is trying to think green by banning plastic bottles and starting a compost club." Spanish: Pensar en verde / Tener conciencia ecológica.
