an overt response to stimuli of a suggestive nature where a body posture imposed by another which is readily accepted and maintained rigidly for a prolonged period of time by a patient who may be perceiving an overwhelming emotion WAXY FLEXIBILITY
Introjection of a high level of anxiety and other emotions perceived in response to a threatening situation. PATHOLOGICAL LIMB RIGIDITY
ritualistic displacement of anxiety through repetitive actions carried out against client’s conscious wishes which have a symbolic relationship to underlying conflict. COMPULSION
A compulsive displacement of anxiety through automatic duplication of the immediately observed movements and gestures made by another individual in the client’s presence ECHOPRAXIA
sudden, unpredictable outbursts of activity without first thinking about the rationality and effects of the behavior. IMPULSIVENESS
Involuntary jerking and twitching of some part of the body, usually located in the neck, face and head. This behavior appears to be of organic etiology but maybe psychic of origin. TICS AND SPASMS
Repeating the speech of another like a resounding echo, as if experiencing a compulsion to respond. ECHOLALIA
Injection of a witty or clever remark into a conversation, or the humorous use of word in such a way as to suggest a different meaning, PUNNING
Phrases or whole sentences with similarly ending lines as in a lyrical poetic manner during a conversation or writing. RHYMING
Words that rhyme are put together without coherent thought. CLANG ASSOCIATION
The conferring of new meanings upon words that are used commonly. NEOLOGISMS
Sudden stopping of speech which occurs when the trend of thought has been lost. BLOCKING
Verbal responses which are not pertinent to or related to the immediate communication content, giving the impression of distractibility or a defect in comprehension and thought process. IRRELEVANCE
The inclusion in the conversation by a highly anxious individual of many unnecessary details, scattered thoughts and explanation. CIRCUMSTANTIALITY
With only one slight relevance to the subject matter being discussed TANGENTIALITY
A continuous stream of conversation with rapid shift in topics owing to pressure of thoughts, sometimes characterized as “TOPIC JUMPING.” FLIGHT OF IDEAS
Shifting of a topic from one subject to another in a completely unrelated way. LOOSENESS OF ASSOCIATION
Words in a sentence that may seem connected but do not compose coherent thought WORD SALAD
The state of being silent or voiceless in the absence of organic etiology. MUTISM
The repetition of the same words or phrases obsessively. VERBIGERATION
An abnormal, exaggerated feeling of wellbeing which is out of proportion to environmental and interpersonal stimuli. EUPHORIA
Affective reaction extending beyond the state of euphoria. ELATION
Reduction or dulling of emotional response to stimuli so that one reacts with less interest, attention and feeling than normal. APATHY
The coexistence of two opposing drives, desires, feelings or emotions. AMBIVALENCE
Loss of capacity to experience and express emotion at normal intensity. BLUNTING
Client manifest quick shift in his emotional response. LABILITY
Feeling emotionally out of harmony with a situation IRRITABILITY
Lack of trust in others, often producing an anxiety producing anticipation of a response from others or a happening that is feared. SUSPICION
Being unaware of the correct date, time, place etc. DISORIENTATION
Having an ability to understand communications as well as what is taking place in one’s environment. COMPREHENSION
An inability to adequately comprehend a situation or recognize the logic of explanations owing to intellectual impairment caused by organic changes or psychic conflict. IMPAIRMENT OF JUDGEMENT
The interference of anxiety and environmental stimuli with one’s ability to focus attention upon communications and occurrences. DISTRACTIBILITY
Being able to focus one’s special senses and intellectual responses upon communications and environmental situations for a period of time. ATTENTION
Being readily responsive to stimuli of a suggestive nature SUGGESTIBILITY
Persistent introspection and inward reflection, thus internalizing instead of externalizing intellectual activity and affect PREOCCUPATION
Impairment of the special senses by which the patient perceives in response to his own inner stimulation. HALLUCINATIONS
False belief which is inconsistent with one’s knowledge and culture. DELUSIONS
misinterpretation of an external stimulus ILLUSIONS
belief that one is under the stronger influence of another person or force. ALIEN CONTROL
Verbalizing the belief that one no longer exists or experiences the former normal feeling reactions but is instead perceiving as if one were something inanimate or unreal and had lost the capacity to perceive as a living being. DEPERSONALIZATION
patient believes that he is someone else and he acts like that person TRANSFER OF PERSONALITY
Memory defects vary in degree and type and may be organic, emotional or mixed origin. MEMORY IMPAIRMENTS
reduction in the mental alertness and awareness STUPOR
Falsification of facts or distortion of memory CONFABULATION
False logic of a fantastic nature that is motivated by a low self-esteem and weak superego. PSEUDOLOGICA FANTASTICA
