Chapter 3 Exception

TermDefinition
Multicultural Education an educational construct that addresses cultural diversity, equity in schools, justice, and democracy.
Justice (education wise) Broadening students' perspectives by exposing them to different opinions with respect to real-world issues such as sexism, racism, and poverty.
Subcultures Shares common characteristics of the larger cultures.
Ethnicity versus Exceptionality Focusing on these three primary objectives: 1. ensure that ethnicity s not mistaken for exceptionality. 2. Ensure that ethnicity does not inadvertently exclude individuals from special ed. 3. Increasing understanding of the subculture of exceptionality.
Exceptionality group A group sharing a set of special abilities or disabilities that are especially valued or that require special accommodation within a given subculture.
Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) Direct and frequent samples of performance from the curriculum in which students are being instructed.
Classwide peer tutoring (CWPT) Research-validated teaching strategy that may be useful in helping elementary school children who are not proficient to learn English more efficiently.
Sheltered-English approach Students receive instruction in English for most of the school day.
The Mexican American Legal Defense Fund Focuses on numerous issues related to Hispanics/Latinos, including education.
Equity Everyone gets what they need, not that everyone gets the same thing.
Diversity This refers to differences and experiences that occur in a group where on person or experience is different.
Juneteenth National Independence Day May raise awareness of the injustices endured by Black people.
The goal of multicultural education in schools To promote pride in students' identities, an understanding and appreciation of differences among all students.
Inclusion Being part of a group or collection.
