Narrative Writing Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Audience | the person or group of people to whom and author writes |
| Author's Purpose | an author's reason for writing (to entertain, to inform, to persuade) |
| Character | a person or being who performs the action of the story |
| Characterization | the art of portraying a character in a narrative either directly or indirectly |
| Chronological order | sequencing events in the order in which they happened |
| Conflict | the struggle of the story's main character or characters against an opposing force |
| Dialogue | a conversation between characters |
| Foreshadowing | hints at events that will occur later in the story |
| Plot | a series of events arranged to tell a story |
| Point of view | the perspective from which a story is told |
| Protagonist | the main character |
| Setting | the time and place in which the story takes place |
| Resolution | the final outcome of a story |
| Crisis | the major turning point for the protagonist |
| Falling Action | unfolding of events that result from the crisis and lead to the conclusion |
