Narrative Writing Terms

TermDefinition
Audience the person or group of people to whom and author writes
Author's Purpose an author's reason for writing (to entertain, to inform, to persuade)
Character a person or being who performs the action of the story
Characterization the art of portraying a character in a narrative either directly or indirectly
Chronological order sequencing events in the order in which they happened
Conflict the struggle of the story's main character or characters against an opposing force
Dialogue a conversation between characters
Foreshadowing hints at events that will occur later in the story
Plot a series of events arranged to tell a story
Point of view the perspective from which a story is told
Protagonist the main character
Setting the time and place in which the story takes place
Resolution the final outcome of a story
Crisis the major turning point for the protagonist
Falling Action unfolding of events that result from the crisis and lead to the conclusion
