What is dysmenorrhea? Pain associated with menses
What is amenorrhea? Absence of menses
What is oligomenorrhea Scant menses
What is menorrhagia? Excessive or prolonged menstruation at regular intervals
What is metrorrhagia? Bleeding of variable amounts between menses
What are interventions for dysmenorrhea? Analgesics, heating pad on lower abdomen, or increase fluids
Uterine bleeding shock manifestations and interventions Pale, change in LOC< hypotensive, tachycardic. Interventions include O2, ABC monitoring, fluids, and IV estrogen.
Primary dysmenorrhea what is causing the problem? When does it begin? Common age range? Characteristics of pain? Period is the cause of the problem. Begins in the first 3-4 cycles. 50-90% of ages 15-25 have experienced pelvic pain that radiates to groin. Pain starts JUST before and during 1st day of menses.
Secondary dysmenorrhea what causes it? age range? pain characteristics? Caused by other pathology affecting uterus such as endometriosis, tumors, cysts, etc. Pain occurs anytime within menstrual cycle and affects ages 30-50.
What are risk factors for dysfunctional uterine bleeding Stress, extreme weight changes, oral contraceptives, intrauterine devices.
What is the nursing process for dysmenorrhea? History/physical, pelvic/pap test, vaginal cultures, hysteroscopy, colposcopy, endocervical curettage, laproscopy
What can ultrasound find? Ultrasound can find the depth of endometrium.
What can a thickened uterus lining cause? Bleeding.
Abnormal bleeding/ dysmenorrhea general intervention Oral contraceptives
Relieve cramping general interventions NSAIDs
Bloating general interventions Diuretics
Mood, chronic pelvic pain intervention SSRI
Therpeutic D&C Dilatation and curettage. Can help prevent further bleeding.
Endometrial ablation function Destroys uterine lining and stops bleeding. Can be done with extreme hot or cold, or frequencies.
Hysterectomy is a removal of the uterus
What is the nursing diagnosis for dysmenorrhea Acute pain, ineffective coping.
Anormal uterine bleeding nursing diagnosis Anxiety, ineffective perfusion, fatigue, and sexual dysfunction.
