Poetry Terms

definitions

TermDefinition
alliteration A writing technique in which similar sounds at the beginning of words are repeated.
rhyme The same or similar sounds at the end of words.
free verse verse that does NOT contain regular patterns of rhythm and rhyme, and is more like everyday speech.
hyperbole A figure of speech in which deliberate exaggeration is used for emphasis.
refrain A line or group of lines that is repeated throughout a poem; usually after every stanza
metaphor A figure of speech in which two things are compare, usually by saying one thing is another.
internal rhyme Two or more rhyming words occur within the same line
sensory language words used in writing that appeal to the senses:
imagery the formation of mental images
assonance the same vowel sounds in nearby word
rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyming lines in a poem.
simile A figure of speech in which two things are compared using the word like or as.
verse A single metrical line of poetry or poetry in general.
onomatopoeia A figure of speech in which words are used to imitate sounds.
stanza Two or more lines of poetry that together form one of the divisions of a poem
personification Giving human attributes to non-human things.
poet the person who writes the poem
speaker the person who narrates the poem
