Temperature The degree of heat present in a subject or object.
Hyperthermia When the body temperature rises above 38C or 100.4F.
Hypothermia When the body temperature is below 35C or 95F.
Thermometer An instrument for measuring and indicating temperature, typically one consisting of a narrow, hermetically sealed glass tube.
Heart rate The speed at which the heart beats.
Beats per minute The number of times a person's heart beats per minute.
Pulse The rhythmic expansion of an artery caused bye the heart pumping blood.
Tachycardia An abnormally fast resting heart rate, generally exceeding 100 bpm caused by disruptions in the heart's electrical system.
Bradycardia A resting heart rate below 60 bpm.
Radial Artery A major vessel in the forearm, running from the forearm muscles, wrist, and hand.
Carotid Artery Two main blood vessels on each side of the neck that supply oxygen to the brain.
Respiratory rate The number of breaths a person takes per minute, typically around 12 to 20 breaths per minute.
Breaths per minute Bpm is the number of breaths a person takes per minute.
Inspiration Breathing air into the lungs.
Expiration Breathing air out of the lungs.
Blood Oxygen Saturation/Pulse Ox Measures the percentage of oxygen carrying hemoglobin in the blood.
Pulse Oximeter A non invasive clip on device that measures arterial oxygen saturation and heart rate by passing light through the finger.
Oxygen Colorless, orderless, and highly reactive gaseous element, O2. Breath in.
Carbon dioxide A colorless, odorless greenhouse gas, CO2. Breath out.
Hemoglobin An iron rich protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to body tissues and returns carbon dioxide.
Erythrocytes A red blood cell.
Blood Pressure Measure the force of blood against artery walls.
Sphygmomanometer A medical device designed to measure blood pressure by using an inflatable cuff to temporarily stop and then release artery flow in a controlled manner.
Systole / systolic Systole is the phase of the cardiac cycle when the heart muscle contracts, pumping blood out of the ventricles to the body. Systolic is the top number in a blood pressure reading.
Diastole / Diastolic The phased of the heartbeat when the heart muscle relaxes.
mmHg Millimeters of mercury is a unit of pressure used in medicine for blood pressure readings reflecting the height a column of mercury would rise under that pressure in a sphygmomanometer.
Korotkoff Sounds Tapping, swishing, and muffled sounds heard with a stethoscope during blood pressure measurement.
Brachial Artery The primary blood vessel supplying oxygen rich blood to the upper arm, elbow, forearms, and hand.
Hypertension High blood pressure where blood forces against artery walls is consistently too high.
Hypotension Abnormally low blood pressure.
Stethoscope a medical instrument for listening to the action of someones heart or breathing.
Electrocardiogram A quick, painless, noninvasive test lasting about 5-10 minutes that measures the hearts electoral activity using electrodes on the skin to detect arrhythmias, heart attacks, or damage.
Body Mass Index (BMI) A numerical value deprived from an adult's height and weight, used as a screening tool to estimate body fat and categorize weight status.
