TermDefinition
Cytoplasmic (cell) membrane In all bacteria A thin sheet of lipid and protein that surrounds the cytoplasm and controls the flow of materials into and out of the cell pool
Bacterial Chromosome or Nucleoid In all bacteria Composed of condensed DNA molecules. DNA directs all genetics and heredity of the cell and codes for all proteins
Ribosomes In all bacteria Tiny particles composed of protein and RNA that are the sites of protein synthesis Dispersed throughout the cytoplasm, often found in chains
Cytoplasm In all bacteria Water-based solution filling the entire cell prominent site of the cells biochemical and synthetic activities complex mixture of sugars, amino acids, and salts contains chromatin body, ribosomes, granules and fibers acting cytoskeleton
Fimbriae In some bacteria Fine, hairlike bristles extending from the cell surface that helps in adhesion to other cells and surfaces
Outer membrane In some bacteria Extra membrane similar to cytoplasmic membrane but also containing lipopolysaccharides. Controls flow of materials, and portions of it are toxic to mammals when released
Cell wall In some bacteria A semirigid casing that provides structural support and shape for the cell
Actin cytoskeleton In some bacteria Long fibers of proteins that encircle the cell just inside the cytoplasmic membrane and contribute to the shape of the cell
Pilus In some bacteria An appendage used for drawing another bacterium close in order to transfer DNA into it
Capsule In some bacteria A coating or layer of molecules external to the cell wall. It serves protective, adhesion, and receptor functions. It may fit tightly or be very loose and diffuse. Also called slime layer and glycocalyx
Inclusion / Granule In some bacteria Stored nutrients such as fat, phosphate, or glycogen deposited in dense crystals or particles that can be tapped into when needed
Bacterial microcompartments In some bacteria Protein-coated packets used to localize enzymes and other proteins in the cytoplasm
Plasmids In some bacteria Double-stranded DNA circle containing extra genes nonessential pieces of DNA duplicated and passed on to offspring during replication important agent in genetic engineering
Flagellum In some bacteria Specialized appendage: attached to the cell by a basal body that holds a long, rotating filament. The movement pushes the cell forward and provides motility

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
