| "This was the king's semi-barbaric method of administering justice. Its perfect fairness is obvious." (pg.3) | This is irony. The king's system was not fair at all. The accused person had no control over the outcome. The outcome was based on chance, not evidence or a trial. |
| "This love affair moved on happily for many months, until one day the king happened to discover its existence." (pg.4) | This is personification. The love affair is given human qualities. It is described as a person with feelings and actions. |
| "As usual in such cases, she was the apple of his eye, and was loved by him above all humanity." (pg.4) | This is a metaphor. This describes how precious the princess was to the king. |
| "Every heart stopped beating, every breath was held, every eye was fixed immovable upon the man." (pg.7) | This is a hyperbole. The extreme exaggeration shows how anxious all those in the area were. It builds the suspense up in the story. |
| "When people gathered together on one of the great trial days, they never knew whether they were to witness a bloody slaughter or a hilarious wedding." (pg. 3) | This is a juxtaposition. Two opposite ideas are placed close together, creating contrast. The bloody slaughter represents death and the hilarious wedding represents a happy celebration. |
| "The royal maiden was well satisfied with her lover, for he was handsome and brave to a degree unsurpassed in all this kingdom." (pg. 4) | This characterizes the young lover as handsome and extremely brave. Braver than anyone else in the kingdom. |
| "The semi-barbaric King had a daughter as blooming as his most florid fancies, and with a soul as imperious as his own." (pg. 4) | This characterizes the princess as very beautiful, strong willed, and powerful. She was just like her father. |
| "Whenever there was a little hitch, and some of his orbs got out of their orbits, he was blander and more genial still, for nothing pleased him more to make the crooked straight and crush down uneven places." (pg. 1) | This characterizes the king as a problem solver. He likes control and believes in harsh punishment. He is cruel. |
